How many days in Buenos Aires, and which neighborhood to stay in

The short answer

Three days cover the classics. A week lets you actually explore. For nightlife stay in Palermo; for a calmer, prettier first trip, Recoleta or Belgrano.

Is 3 days enough?

It depends on why you’re here. Three days is enough for an active tour of the main sights. But the city is enormous and incredibly varied, so if you want to really explore it, give it at least a week. There are great places just outside the city too: La Plata, Tigre and the estancias in the province. And as for restaurants, you couldn’t get through them in a month.

What would I skip with only one day?

La Boca. I love it, but if you only have one day, it’s far away and the trip there and back eats a lot of your time. Instead, wander around San Telmo or Recoleta.

Are day trips to Tigre, Colonia or La Plata worth it?

Definitely, but I’d save them for when you already know the city a bit. They’re a great day four or five, not a day one.

Which day should I arrive?

You won’t see everything in one day anyway, so plan around your own priorities. If markets matter to you, make sure you have a Sunday in the city: that’s when San Telmo’s fair and Feria de Mataderos happen.

Where should I stay?

Neighborhood Good for Why
Palermo Nightlife, first trip, foodies Bars, restaurants, street art, lots going on
Microcentro Nightlife, sightseeing Close to the classics, lively
Recoleta A calmer first trip, couples Beautiful architecture, elegant vibe
Belgrano A calmer stay Interesting vibe, beautiful streets, local feel
Chacarita Travelers who like local life Cool for visitors too, plus great food
Villa Crespo, Colegiales Longer stays Quiet, beautiful in their own way, very convenient

For nightlife, Palermo and Microcentro are about equal in my eyes. If you’re staying a while, Villa Crespo and Colegiales are where you start feeling like a local.

Add: San Telmo and Puerto Madero — your take; average price of a decent hotel or Airbnb per area.

Where to take photos?

That deserves its own post, and here it is: the best photo spots in Buenos Aires.
